I would be interested to hear from anyone else who offers a similar service and your thoughts on what works/doesn’t work. Also, if anyone has any innovative techniques for promotion, I’d be interested to hear them!
![]() As part of my Chartership, I have decided to formally create promotional materials to raise the profile of the Learning Centre within our campus site. As we are a small campus site, the lecturers and the students all know and use the Learning Centre regularly. Our open-plan design with the Café means that we sometimes gain students during lunchtime; they no longer have to leave the Learning Centre to grab a bite to eat. Very often there is a steady-stream of students and staff using the space and taking advantage of the resources we offer. Although well used, I decided to create some promotional materials to encourage students & staff to use the info-skills support service that we offer (more on the proofreading service that we’ve just started to offer in a later blog). This includes providing support with IT, research, information & study skills, and can either be on an individual or group basis. The picture above is an example of a promotional postcard that I created and asked to be included within the student bulletin, and below is the poster version I created which was also emailed to all staff based at the campus and placed on noticeboards. The bulletin and staff email list were therefore just two channels of communication already in use at the campus that I felt I could use for marketing purposes. Although, as I’ve previously mentioned, that we are well used, I felt that as the campus is currently going through a refurbishment, it was a good opportunity to rebrand the info-skills sessions and remind staff and students of what we do. So far, on an informal level, the service has been well-received, and the number of ad-hoc support that I have done has definitely increased. I think students are now much more confident to come and ask for help than they were at the start of the academic year, and teaching staff are definately encouraging their students to access support. I’ve created a feedback questionnaire using Survey Monkey that I can email out to those who have used the service, to allow me to see if we really are providing a service that is valued, and of course, how we can improve it. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who offers a similar service and your thoughts on what works/doesn’t work. Also, if anyone has any innovative techniques for promotion, I’d be interested to hear them!
