For those of you who are perhaps not familiar with the Chartership process, the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) has been developed as a self-assessment tool for professional development, as well as being a framework for skills analysis, staff training and development plans (CILIP, 2014). There seems to be varying opinions as to how many areas you need to focus on for your Chartership application, but the general consensus appears to be between 6-10 areas. Table 1 lists the areas that I have decided to focus on. As the PKSB is so vast, it can be quite hard to decide what to choose. In the end, I decided that it made sense to pick things that would allow me to learn and grow within my role at the College, as well as things that I know I lack knowledge in and want to know more about. I think some sections will be easier than others to focus on, such as information literacy and social media, as these are things that I feel relatively confident about (although there is always room for improvement!). Other areas however, such as a detailed knowledge of copyright and people management, I have less experience with and therefore I think I will perhaps need to devote more time to. I’m already thinking of ways in which I can obtain evidence for all these areas I have chosen; so far I’ve come up with courses I’m attending (then implementing things I have learnt) and new services that we can provide within the Learning Centre. Specifically regarding the selection of materials and resources, I definitely want to strengthen the academic liaison work I do and get the teaching staff more involved with stock selection, although this might be a job for the summer when we start planning for the next academic year. I have also found that reading CILIP Update magazine and the blogs of other library and information professionals very informative. By focussing on these areas for my portfolio, I hope they will allow me not only to develop on a personal level, but that the Learning Centre as a whole will also gain as it will prove that we are a necessary and worthwhile service that is well used and supported by both staff and students; this is where the evidence and any feedback I get will come in useful.
